About Your Instructor

shearingDoug Rathke, a seasoned shearer, knows what it takes to learn the art of shearing and he knows what it takes to teach it on a level so it can be understood and retained. That is why so many people have taken his sheep shearing course. Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced shearer, there is something for everyone to learn.

Various shearing schools are put on throughout the year. The schools may be held formally in conjunction with a university, done in cooperation with the extension service, or held on our farm in a group or private session. Check the event calendar for upcoming schools. Here is a video from a shearing school in Tennessee courtesy of Tennessee Home and Farm.

Private sessions offer one-on-one instruction and are open for scheduling. A number of people who completed the shearing course come back for a refresher or to continue to improve their skills. Many of those who have completed the course have gone on to earn additional income as custom shearers for nearby flocks.
